Sherlock Holmes: probably the most well known detective of all time and a story which has been utilized time and time again various forms. In fact, right now there’s somewhat of a craze for Sherlock themed products. We have the recent set of Sherlock Holmes movies, the BBC Sherlock series, and CBS’ Elementary. It seems fitting therefore that someone should come along now with a game based on the Sherlock Holmes story line. Enter Baker Street: Roleplaying in the World of Sherlock Holmes by Fearlight Games.
In Baker Street, you play a detective who is helping Dr. Watson after Sherlock Holmes goes missing and is presumed dead. “Victorian streets, foggy nights, and crime most foul await. Will the nefarious plans of crafty villains come to fruition or can the champions of justice from Baker Street save the day?”
A special mechanic of this game is the Sherlock die. The Sherlock die is rolled during every dice roll of the game. Depending on the result, it can either greatly benefit you or greatly hurt your chances of success. “The sides are numerical 1, 2, 3, a Watson icon, a Moriarty icon, and a Sherlock icon. If the result of The Sherlock Die is a numerical value (1, 2, or 3), that value rolled on any of the other dice in the roll is counted as a success. A Sherlock Holmes icon is a wild result and allows an investigator the choice of a 1, 2, or 3. A Watson result allows the investigator to gain one extra success, and a Professor Moriarty result is a bad result. When Moriarty is rolled, each unsuccessful result removes one success from the roll.”

Chances of success
I have to say I was a little late to the game on this one. The campaign has already amassed $14,000 in support within the first couple of weeks. That’s four times the original goal. Part of the success probably comes from the popularity of Sherlock Holmes.
