Rilavashana SanParite, called Bold Riley is a wild young princess from the prosperous eastern nation of Prakkalore. On her 17th birthday she abdicates her claims to the throne, packs a small bag with her mother’s maps, saddles up a horse and departs to explore the world of The Coin.
The first volume in this series, The Legend of Bold Riley saw our hero fighting gluttonous monsters, uncovering a ruined temples murderous secret, meeting powerful gods and experiencing her first heartbreak.
Impressions
This graphic novel is very different the previous novels that I’ve reviewed: ERA and Fairy Quest. While those two were in a large part focused on political turmoil, Bold Riley seems to be more of an action/adventure novel focusing on the character Bold Riley. In terms of overall tone it’s probably closer to Rep&Red.
The campaign calls the project “ambitious in its scope as each volume contains a handful of chapters each illustrated by a different artist”. While this is an interesting concept, it also might be the one down sides to the project. Because each chapter is being illustrated by a different artist, there isn’t a lot of cohesion between artistic styles, so I’m on the fence about that part. I’ll try not to make a judgement call until I see the final product.

Chances of success
This is another campaign that has started off with a lot of energy. Many of the initial backers are probably coming from fans of the first volume of Bold Riley. However, this campaign is not getting enough attention from its creators. In fact, it hasn’t gotten any attention so far. There hasn’t been an update nor any comments. This is concerning. Even a campaign with an incredible amount of momentum can fail without attention from its creator!
In terms of production, it seems that the production itself will be handled by Northwest Press so all of the funds will go directly to paying the artists. Since all the publishing is being handled by a professional company, that should reduce the risk of failed production.
