Game overview

Forum: Subterranea: A 3D Fantasy Role Playing Game

Subterranea A 3D Fantasy Role Playing GameSubterranea, created by Cloud Nine Games, is based on the open source version of D&D 3.5e and is set in a very similar world to D&D. Subterranea is set within, around, and below, a massive swamp named Vengarth. Some time ago a poor fishing village by the name of Gimlet, whose inhabitants scratched out a living on the edge of the swamp, had a marked improvement of fortune after a mysterious Elf-Lord appeared in their midst.

Cloud Nine Games has a list of interesting game mechanics. It uses tactical turn-based combat, physics-based emergent gameplay, puzzles and traps, branching dialogue with choice and consequence, and deep character customization.

Tactical

Tactical abilities include melee attack, ranged attack, cast spell, sneak attack, attack of opportunity, bull rush, use magic item, drink potion, feint, overrun, read scroll, ready defense, total defense, use skill, use ability. AIs have access to these abilities as well.

Emergent Gameplay

Want to cast Earthquake to bring a cave roof down? The Physics Engine calculates what happens next – who has to make Reflex saves to avoid or reduce damage and who is safe from flying debris.

Puzzles and Traps

When creating your characters, you will be able to assign ability scores, race (7 options), class (11 options), gender, appearance attributes, skills, feats and spells to produce highly customized characters.

Branching Dialogue with Choice and Consequence

You’ll need to develop some skills in Diplomacy, Bluff and/or Intimidation to thrive when pitted against the machinations of the game’s antagonists.

Deep Character Customization

The game will utilize the unity engine, which means support for Mac and Linux as well as Windows devices. However, support for Mac and Linux will be delayed slightly unless the first stretch goal for the project is reached. As difficult as it might be to push Mac and Linux support into the base goal, it might be worthwhile for Cloud Nine Games to do so. The project would probably receive better support that way.

Kickstarter Specifics

Goal: $12,500 AUD
Pledge Levels: $5 – $500 AUD
End Date: Sun, Mar 30 2014 5:00 PM EST

Chances of success

Overall, Subterranea: A 3D Fantasy Role Playing Game has a fair chance of succeeding. Because the project utilizes already existing core game mechanics, a lot of bugs would be taken care of in the foundation architecture rather than having to start from scratch with creating mechanics and debugging them.

In addition, both alpha and beta versions of the game will be released. Allowing backers to help you test out the game is always a great way to get support and to produce a better end product. There also seems to be a fair amount of initial support for the game, both on Kickstarter and on their Steam Greenlight page.
